What is our Superpower?

Learning Landscape Thursday, 05 Mar 2026

At a recent professional learning event, Derek Bartels, who has worked alongside Living Faith for many years, asked a simple question: ‘What is your school’s superpower?

Many schools might point to buildings, programs, performance or reputation. And all of those things matter. But they are not what defines a school’s true strength. A school’s true strength is found in the kind of people it shapes. He suggested that Living Faith’s superpower is something deeper.

Our story

As someone new to this community, I have been reflecting on that. Even in a short time, I have witnessed the commitment, care and conviction that give those words real meaning.

A Story Shaped by Purpose

At Living Faith, our mission calls us to illuminate minds, inspire hearts and ignite service. Our vision reminds us that every learner is deeply known and loved and that learning should be adventurous and purposeful.

These are not just words. They shape daily practice.

We are deeply committed to strong foundations in literacy and numeracy because academic rigour and clear expectations matter. But alongside knowledge, we are intentionally nurturing something more. We are helping children grow in confidence, encouraging them to ask thoughtful questions, teaching them to think deeply and act with integrity, and supporting them to persevere when learning feels challenging. We guide them to recognise their gifts and use them to serve others.

Because education at Living Faith is about more than instruction. It is about formation.

It is the steady shaping of young hearts and minds. The development of confidence, character and capability. The nurturing of faith, courage and compassion.

Because school is not only about what children know. It is about who they are becoming.

That belief shapes every decision we make.

Growing Strong Minds and Strong Hearts

The world our children are growing into will require adaptability, creativity, collaboration and compassion. It will require young people who can discern wisely, contribute meaningfully and lead with courage.

These qualities do not develop by accident. They grow when students feel known and supported, when learning stretches them appropriately and when values are lived, not just spoken.

This is what it means to flourish in learning and in life. It is the steady development of confidence, character and capability, strengthened year by year.

A Story That Continues

One of the things that has stood out to me most is that Living Faith has always been willing to reflect and respond thoughtfully to what young people need. It has not been about chasing trends or holding tightly to what has always been done. It has been about staying anchored in mission and moving forward with purpose.

This is what it means to be the change our students need.

As our community continues to grow and our story unfolds, that commitment does not change. It deepens. The same heart and the same purpose remain at the centre: education should prepare young people not only for the next year level, but for the life that lies beyond it.

If our superpower is our story, then it is this:

We are devoted to nurturing strong minds and strong hearts, equipping our students not only to succeed, but to contribute meaningfully wherever life leads them.

And that story continues to unfold, as we faithfully shape the next generation of thoughtful, capable and purpose-filled young people.
