The Butterfly Effect: Growing as Stewards of Creation

Student Speak Thursday, 21 May 2026

Our Year 1 students have been buzzing with excitement this semester as they explore lifecycles and habitats in PBL.

Through hands-on experiences and lots of wonder-filled moments, students have been learning about how living things grow, change and depend on safe habitats to survive.

One of the highlights of the term has been watching real butterfly chrysalises hatch right in our classroom. Students eagerly checked on them each day, noticing tiny changes and waiting patiently for the special moment when the butterflies emerged. There were smiles, gasps and lots of excitement as students watched the butterflies slowly stretch their wings for the very first time. We caught it all on video too.

Alongside this experience, students have been learning about lifecycles and discovering what living things need to survive, including food, water, shelter and care. They have also been creating and building habitats for different creatures, thinking carefully about how we can help protect animals and the environments they live in.

This learning has also connected beautifully with Christian Studies as students explore the idea of stewardship, learning that God calls us to care for His creation with kindness, responsibility and love.

Our students have loved sharing what they have been learning.

“I liked watching the butterflies come out. They looked small at first and then their wings got bigger.”
- Kai

“We are learning about homes for animals so they can be safe and have food and water.”
- Adalind

“The cocoons changed into butterflies. It was cool because we got to watch it happen.”
- Senod

“I felt happy when the butterflies came out of the chrysalis because we looked after them in our class.”
- Max

“God wants us to look after animals and the world He made.”
- Birdie

“I liked learning about what animals need to live and how we can look after them.”
- Finley

It has been wonderful watching students learn through curiosity, creativity and care for the world around them. We look forward to seeing how their love for God’s creation continues to grow throughout the semester.
