More Than a Game: The Value of School Sport at Living Faith

Principals Pen Thursday, 12 Mar 2026

There have been many parts of South East Queensland that have had well over 100 mLs of rain over the weekend. Sadly for us the forecast of heavy rain saw the cancellation of both NISSA Gala Day and our Living Faith Family Welcome Picnic.

While cancellations like these are always disappointing, they also remind us just how valuable these opportunities are for our students. Events such as the NISSA Gala Days are far more than simply a day away from the classroom - they are an important part of the holistic education we seek to provide for our students in Years 4–6.

Participation in the NISSA sports program allows our students to represent their school with pride while developing important life skills.

Through sport, students learn teamwork, resilience, perseverance and sportsmanship. They discover how to encourage one another, how to handle both victory and disappointment with grace, and how to give their best effort for the sake of their team.

For many students, Gala Days also provide opportunities to try new sports and challenge themselves in unfamiliar situations. Playing against students from other schools helps them grow in confidence and independence while strengthening their sense of belonging to the Living Faith community.

Just as importantly, these events foster friendships. Students learn to support classmates in different ways than they do in the classroom - celebrating a great pass, encouraging a teammate after a mistake, or simply sharing the excitement of representing their school together.

As a school we place great value on these experiences because they contribute to the development of well-rounded young people. Physical activity, teamwork and healthy competition are all part of helping our students grow not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well.

Looking ahead, as Living Faith continues its journey toward offering secondary schooling, the sporting opportunities available to our students will also grow and evolve. Expanding into secondary education will open the door to broader competitions, new sports and deeper pathways for students who wish to pursue their sporting interests further. Our commitment to providing excellent sporting opportunities for our students will continue to develop alongside the growth of our school.

While we cannot control the weather, we remain committed to providing these opportunities throughout the year. We look forward to the next Gala Day and the chance for our students to once again step onto the field, represent Living Faith with pride, and enjoy the many benefits that come from being part of school sport.

Grace and peace
